Battle of the Breeds Today!

battle-imageThe race is to the swift – and there will be two fast fillies in the final race of the day at River Downs on Sunday. That’s not unusual for a racetrack, but was IS unusual is the fact that two different breeds of horses will be breaking from the gate.

Sunday’s last race is billed as “The Battle of the Breeds” and will pit a Quarter Horse against a Thoroughbred.
Eyes Forward is the Quarter horse entrant, the Black 3-year-old filly won the Beulah Park Futurity last season. She drew the inside post and will get a 2 lb. concession because she is only 3-years-old.

Derby Day Storm is fresh off a start in the $50,000 Vivacious Handicap at River Downs, where she lost all chance when she had to be taken up when interfered with in the stretch. Last season she ran second in the Vivacious and the T.F. Classen Memorial at Thistledown.

In the paddock on Saturday it was a jovial “Battle of the Jockeys” as Andre Sanchez III and Gabriel Lagunes traded barbs before the first race. “I’ll be playing ‘Catch me if you can’ and I don’t think you can,” said Sanchez, who will be aboard the Quarter Horse. Lagunes came right back pointing at Sanchez “You better be looking over your shoulder when we get close to the wire, because that will be me going by you!”

The exhibition race will be at a distance of 400 Yards and post time will be approximately 5:30 p.m. Post time for the first eight live thoroughbred races is at 1:30 p.m. Admission and parking is free the entire day.
